YUCK and SPAZE CRAFTE ONE
50 / 50
Invisible NYC is proud to host, 50 / 50, a two-person exhibit by French artist, Gael Cecchin (aka YUCK) and NYC based artist, Spaze Crafte One (SC1). YUCK is a graphic designer for the multimedia agency “Teamchman” in Lille, France. He is currently working on illustrations for children, book designs and customizing various limited-editioned toys. Spaze Crafte One is a multi-disciplinary art educator and cultural producer, with a background in graffiti. He is also the creator and operator of the website, Soh Nup Industries which specializes in innovative “urban” jewelry and art. Among his many current projects is “We DREAM!”, a collaborative eco-coloring book.
Although the men are culturally diverse, living and working in different parts of the world, for the exhibit, 50 / 50, they present an integrated yet complimentary approach to a playful, urban, creative process of creating toys and “fun art” for adults. SC1 will exhibit varying multi-media works and toys that explore themes of balance, sharing and equality; and the concept of half empty or half full and will premiere pieces from the “Typographic Mutante” series of small scale abstract graffiti works. He will also present large-scale works from the “drip theories” series of abstract graffiti paintings, mixed media paintings on wood, a number of canvases from the “scroll series”, a new spray paint stencil mandala, and a DC Comics piece.
YUCK’s toys and multi-media art is speckled with his signature idiosyncratic monsters that seem to frolic together. These creatures, while cute, are all slightly zombified, at times appearing a bit brain dead. Along with his limited-editioned toys he will present some of his rarely seen drawings. YUCK’s art is less gestural and more narrative than that of SC1 creating a beautiful play between the two artists’ approach to similar media as well as between subject matter. This is expressly and expressively represented by the collaborative “Qee Cat” toy, each of whose two halves were painted by one of the artists. Vertically divided down its center from front to back, it becomes a two-person piece on 3-dimensional art-toy. Throughout, this exhibit explores the notion of opposites, halves of a whole, and collaboration.
For this exhibit at Invisible NYC, YUCK and Spaze Crafte One, create adult playlands through anthropomorphic and fantastical characters. These humorous characters appear as toy figures in numerous sizes and variations, in electric-colored comic-like paintings, and on mixed media “objects”. While the exhibit is playful and taps into a slightly twisted adult playland, it is highly sophisticated and stunning to behold. It is the perfect summer exhibit!
The show will run from August 7th through July 6th 2008, Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 8:00 PM. The opening reception will be on Thursday August 7th from 7:00-10:00 PM.
